POSITION:  Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) seeks a full-time attorney to supervise the work of its Housing Discrimination Law Project in its Minneapolis office.  MMLA provides legal representation to clients with low incomes, disabilities, and seniors - supported by funding from the State of Minnesota, the federal government, local governments, the United Way, foundations, local law firms and corporations, etc.  MMLA enjoys a good rapport with, and strong support from the organized bar.  MMLA does not receive funds from the Legal Services Corporation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Responsibilities include supervision of legal work, grant writing and management, work planning, and evaluation of staff.  The position also involves representation of low income and other vulnerable clients in legal matters affecting their housing and civil rights.  Representation includes all levels of advocacy including litigation, policy work, and community education.


QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must have at least three years of experience in the practice of law, including litigation.  Experience in poverty law, legal services work, or equivalent general practice is preferred.  Experience in the areas of housing discrimination and tenant rights is desirable.  Experience supervising, teaching, and/or mentoring others is also desirable.  Applicants must be licensed in Minnesota or eligible for admission by reciprocity.


Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to the needs of low-income/vulnerable clients.  Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills are required.  Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences and relevant language skills are a plus. Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office is required.


SALARY:  Based upon experience and the MMLA salary schedule.  Benefits include vacation, sick leave, family medical, life, and long-term disability insurance.
