ATTORNEY OR ADVOCATE - FULL-TIME, 6-MONTH TEMPORARY POSITION

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid/Minnesota Disability Law Center – Mankato Office

   

POSITION:  Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s Minnesota Disability Law Center (Legal Aid/MDLC) seeks one full-time attorney or advocate to work in its Mankato office for a six-month temporary position starting January 2018.

 

BACKGROUND:  MDLC is a statewide program of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) which receives federal funding to serve as Minnesota’s Protection and Advocacy system for persons with disabilities.  The main office is in Minneapolis with other MDLC offices in Mankato, Fertile, and Duluth. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The individual in this position will be based in MDLC’s Mankato office.  The position will visit locations across Minnesota that serve people with disabilities with employment and other supportive services.  The visits will involve meeting with individuals with disabilities to gain their perspectives on the services they are receiving, talking with professionals about the services they provide, and assessing the scope, range, and adequacy of services provided.  This position will also conduct accessibility audits of job assistance providers.  This position will involve significant travel within the state. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Concern for the needs and rights of people with disabilities is required. This position also requires excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.  Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office is required.  Access to reliable transportation statewide is required.  Knowledge of disability law and familiarity with service systems is desired.  Experience in providing services to individuals with disabilities is desired.  A working knowledge of Social Security Work Incentives, the State’s Vocational Rehabilitation System, “transition” services for youth ages 18-21, and county-based employment supports is preferred.  Second language skills and experiences with diverse economic, social, or cultural communities are also a plus.  

 

COMPENSATION:  The position will be compensated up to $28,320 based on an annual maximum salary rate of $56,640, depending on experience, plus reimbursement for travel expenses.
