IN-HOUSE COUNSEL PANEL SERIES: LITIGATING EFFICIENTLY TO ACHIEVE BUSINESS OBJECTIVES AND INCLUSION IN THE COURTROOM

September 17, 2019 @ 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

As part of its continuing in-house counsel CLE series, Cozen O’Connor’s Minneapolis office will host two interactive panel discussions focusing on essential topics for in-house counsel:  “Litigating Efficiently to Achieve Business Objectives” and “Diversity & Inclusion:  Providing  Courtroom Opportunities for All Litigators.” The panel discussions will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at the APEX Conference Center, 40 South 7th Street (Street Level) in Minneapolis, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Participants in the panels include current and former in-house counsel including:   Cozen O’Connor Attorneys Kari Berman, Mark Jacobson and Mayura Noordyke; Senior Lawyer from Cargill Inc., Molly Thornton; Associate General Counsel from UnitedHealth Group, Nadia Hasan; Ramsey County District Court Judge Leonardo Castro; and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney from the USAO District of Minnesota, Lindsey Middlecamp.  The panels are supported by Hennepin County Bar Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, Minnesota Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers and Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association.

Part I: “Operations:  Litigating Efficiently to Achieve Business Objectives”  (3-4 p.m.)

Litigation is becoming more expensive and can often spiral out of control. In-house counsel face increasing pressures to reduce litigation spend while providing cost effectiveness and certainty of outcomes. If litigation is necessary, how do you control costs and match them to business objectives?  This discussion will provide practical tips and insights on a range of issues including: Defining and communicating business objectives, ensuring inside and outside counsel are aligned as a team, setting a budget that makes sense, dealing with insurers, minimizing the time your business people devote to the litigation, handling e-documents without breaking the bank, striking the proper balance between “best” outside counsel and cheapest outside counsel, and  things that drive in-house counsel crazy (and how to avoid them).

Part II:  Diversity & Inclusion:   Providing Courtroom Opportunities for All Litigators (4:30-5:30 p.m.)

Young litigators, especially female and minority litigators, have difficulty getting courtroom experience. Our panel will discuss the problem and ways in which in-house counsel, law firms and the courts can work together to help solve it.

Welcome and registration begins at 2:30 p.m., the first panel discussion is from 3 to 4 p.m. and the second panel discussion is from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. A reception featuring light fare is scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
