Position Summary

Serves as legal counsel to represent the interest of the client, Securian Financial Group, Inc. and its affiliates, under the overall direction of the General Counsel. Provides a wide variety of legal services in one or more specialized areas of insurance and financial services law to assist in the achievement of department objectives

The associate in the Counsel position will play a key role in providing legal advice to Individual Financial Solutions at Securian, focusing primarily on support to our individual life insurance and individual annuity product lines.   In addition, this position will also include developing company policy and providing legal advice on a variety of legal and regulatory issues related to insurance, financial services, and other enterprise issues.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing legal advice and support for Securian’s individual life insurance and individual annuity product administration, product development, and distribution, including wholly-owned broker-dealer and registered investment advisor entities.
  • Conducting legal research, review, analysis and drafting of various documents, including advisory contracts and disclosures, insurance policies, and various policies and procedures
  • Researching legal and regulatory requirements and industry practices relevant to insurance and registered securities products
  • Collaborating with compliance partners on relevant compliance matters and identifying, developing and implementing control enhancements and risk mitigation strategies
  • Consulting with Individual Financial Solutions to provide well-reasoned, concise counsel on legal risks while helping to achieve business-oriented goals
  • Complaint resolution, review of advertising materials, and preparation of registration statements and related documents
  • Identifying potential legal or regulatory issues which may impact the organization’s business strategy, products, or business conduct and providing proactive legal advice accordingly
  • Developing productive relationships with industry colleagues, and participating on various enterprise and industry committees relating to insurance products

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to the practice of law in the State of Minnesota or ability to be admitted within 6 months
  • 3+ years’ experience in insurance law (fixed and variable insurance products) and/or securities experience (’33 Act and ’40 Act)
  • Strong understanding or desire to learn individual life insurance and annuity product development and distribution, including an Interest and aptitude for mathematics and actuarial concepts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey technical, legal information and ensure understanding of client constituents

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of the financial services and insurance industries, including issues associated with regulation, manufacturing, administration and distribution of related products and services
  • Broker-dealer and/or Registered Investment Advisor related work experience, a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with industry partners and associates across the organization
  • Practical-minded and business-and results-oriented while operating within Securian’s risk appetite

Physical job requirements:

  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
  • Ability to utilize keyboard, mouse and computer for up to 3-6 hours per day
  • Ability to utilize telephone for approximately 1-3 hours per day
  • Ability to perform simple grasping including handwriting, paper manipulation, sorting, folding, etc. periodically throughout entire workday
