Gender Justice is a 501c3 nonprofit legal and policy advocacy organization devoted to addressing the causes and consequences of gender inequality. We seek remedies for discrimination based on sex, gender, or sexual orientation. Our experienced attorneys represent clients directly in state and federal court and before administrative agencies. In addition to pursuing justice through the legal system, we also seek to improve the law through policy advocacy. Through public education and training programs, we expand people’s knowledge of their rights and the science behind the ways that implicit bias leads to systemic discrimination. Gender Justice primarily works in Minnesota, but we are open to clients in Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. We’re a small but mighty organization looking for the newest member of our ambitious, highly-effective, and growing team.
The Staff Attorney will work to advance gender justice and civil rights in Minnesota and surrounding states through litigation, legislative advocacy, education, coordination with community organizations and activists, and outreach to communities. The Staff Attorney in this position has responsibility for maintaining expertise and overseeing Gender Justice’s strategic litigation and policy advocacy work in our new and growing reproductive rights and justice program. Gender Justice co-leads the Minnesotans for Trust, Respect, Access campaign and the Staff Attorney will play a key role in the campaign. Our litigation and policy priorities focus on expanding access to abortion, contraception, and ensuring safe and healthy pregnancies. The Staff Attorney will also participate in developing novel legal strategies and will research, develop, and implement new state-based strategies for improving health care access through strategic litigation and administrative advocacy. Position may include some opportunities for presenting CLEs, public education, and training.
The Staff Attorney will work closely with local social justice allies as well as with our colleagues in the Alliance, a consortium that includes four other state/regional law centers in Washington, Pennsylvania, California, and New Mexico. Through collaborative efforts with our Alliance colleagues, the Staff Attorney will undertake projects with national impact. This is a grant-funded position with secured funding through April 2018 and with a high likelihood of renewal.
- J.D. and minimum of two years legal experience.
- Admission to Minnesota bar (or ability to waive in or otherwise obtain MN licensure within a reasonable time frame), strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of reproductive rights, health, and justice issues strongly preferred.
- Experience in policy/legislative advocacy preferred.
- Commitment to Gender Justice’s mission and values.
- Willingness to take initiative and think creatively about projects, strategies, and campaigns to meet litigation, advocacy, and movement-building goals.
- A high level of independence, good judgment, excellent speaking and writing abilities.
- Strong organizational, project-, and time-management skills.
- An ability to speak and write about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for both lawyer and non-lawyer audiences.
- Experience working effectively with/in communities of color, LGBTQ communities, and/or low-income people.
- Sense of humor and a commitment to a diverse, collaborative work environment.
- Some travel required.
Small relocation stipend available for candidates currently living outside of Minnesota. Full-time employees are eligible for employer-subsidized health and dental insurance, generous paid time-off, and 3% employer-match to an IRA. Payment of bar dues and financial support for CLEs and professional development also included.
