The Supreme Court seeks one member to fill an attorney member position on the Minnesota Board of Public Defense.  The board consists of four public members appointed by the governor and five attorney members appointed by the Supreme Court.  Attorney members must be admitted to the practice of law and well acquainted with the defense of persons accused of crimes, but not employed as a prosecutor or judge.

The Board is responsible for approving and recommending a budget to the Legislature for the Board, the office of the state public defender, the judicial district public defenders, and public defense corporations.  The state public defender, with approval from the Board, establishes various standards including, but not limited to, caseload size, legal staff size, qualifications, and training.  The Board also approves the standards and procedures for the eligibility for appointment, assessment, and collection of the costs for legal representation.
