Dorsey & Whitney LLP seeks a tax associate with three to five years of experience to join the Tax, Trusts & Estates group in our Minneapolis or Seattle offices. This associate will work on a wide range of transactional tax matters including structuring and forming business and investment entities, advising on tax issues in domestic and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, restructurings, and equity and debt securities offerings, and advising on renewable energy projects including development, tax equity financing, purchase and sale transactions. 

The following qualifications are required:

- JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school

- Strong academic performance

- Excellent research and writing skills

- Minnesota or Washington bar admission or the ability to become admitted in Minnesota or Washington

Three to five years of experience as a transactional tax attorney is preferred.

For Seattle applicants only,the salary range for this position is $205,000 - $260,000. Pay is determined based on depth of experience in the practice area. The individual hired for this position may have the option of electing a lower billable-hours track with a proportional reduction in salary. Associates are eligible to participate in Dorsey’s associate bonus program, subject to the program’s conditions and restrictions.

Description

Hennepin County is hiring the Examiner of Titles. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of real estate law including the powers and duties of the District Court relative to registration of real estate titles; a reputation for fostering cooperation with a demonstrated ability to develop long range plans, resolve issues and problems, and coordinate projects; and excellent interpersonal and communication skills to direct a staff and to personally interact with elected officials, county officials, court leaders and the legal community.

In this role, you will perform duties of the Examiner of Titles as defined in Minnesota Statutes, Chapters 508 and 508A, including planning and directing the examination of titles for Hennepin County, conducting hearings in court cases involving registration of titles and registered land, and serving as legal advisor to the Registrar of Titles.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both remotely and on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center building in downtown Minneapolis, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN, 55487 as job duties require. Work hours are flexible and will primarily be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. 

New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.  About the position type:
This position is full-time, benefit-earning and unclassified. Unclassified positions are non-permanent (at will) and are not subject to HR law/rules.

In this position, you will:

  • Perform all statutory duties of the Examiner of Titles and oversee operations and staff in the Examiner of Titles department.
  • Process applications and petitions in district court Torrens proceedings and CPT applications to register land; examine title to land and issue reports to the court; supervise all stages of land registration proceedings and proceedings subsequent to initial registration.
  • Conduct hearings on Torrens cases placed on the land title calendar and other cases referred by District Court receive and review evidence; recommend entry of decrees and orders; review and analyze pleadings and briefs of counsel; draft recommended orders and memoranda of law.
  • Issue certifications regarding probate transfers, trustee's deeds, court ordered transfers, and Directives as authorized by statute.
  • Serve as legal advisor and provide continuous assistance to the Registrar of Titles regarding the technical and legal workings and requirements of the Torrens system.
  • Hire, supervise, and train support staff and deputy examiners; assign deputies to hear cases on the land title calendar; coordinate, review, and monitor deputy examiners' work and projects.
  • Evaluate performance of department employees.
  • Develop, monitor, and control department budget.
  • Assist attorneys, real estate professionals, lenders, title insurance company personnel, and landowners in processing documents, applications, and petitions regarding Torrens land.
  • Develop and update instructional manuals and materials for customers of the Torrens system; keep examiner's webpage current and helpful to customers.
  • Prepare articles and deliver lectures regarding property issues to members of the bar, county recorders, and other persons and organizations interested in the Torrens system.
  • Monitor legislation affecting real estate; coordinate the drafting and sponsorship of proposed legislation regarding the land registration act and related statues.

Need to have:

  • Seven years or more of legal experience as an attorney with a focus on real property law.
  • Three years or more of experience serving as an Examiner of Titles or Deputy Examiner of Titles. 
  • A valid and current Minnesota license to practice law.

About the department:
The Examiner of Titles and Deputy Examiners are attorneys appointed by the judges of the district court to perform the judicial, administrative, and legal adviser duties specified in the Minnesota Land Registration Act, also sometimes called the Torrens Act. The office consists of the Examiner, 5 deputy examiners, and 3 administrative staff.  In Hennepin County, 41% of tax parcels are registered. This office assists the district court by examining titles, issuing reports and conducting hearings in court cases involving the registration of land titles and in court cases involving problems or disputes with land which has been previously registered.

The Supreme Court is seeking applicants for two attorney-member vacancies on the Standing Committee for No-Fault Arbitration.  Experience in personal injury work and no-fault insurance claims is required.
 
The vacancies are for four-year terms ending on December 31, 2027; renewable for one additional four-year term.
 
The Standing Committee for No-Fault Arbitration meets the third Friday of the month in January, April, July and October.  The Committee oversees the day-to-day administration of no-fault claims by the American Arbitration Association and the No-Fault Arbitrator Panel.  This includes investigating administrative and arbitrator complaints, as well as hearing appeals under Rule 8 of the No-Fault Arbitration Rules.

The Minnesota Supreme Court is seeking an attorney member applicant for the 12-member Minnesota State Board of Legal Certification.  Board members serve three-year terms and may be reappointed once.  The term for the current vacancy begins on January 1, 2024 and runs through December 31, 2026.

The all-volunteer Board is responsible for accrediting agencies to certify lawyers as specialists in designated fields of law.  The Board reviews and evaluates program applications, adopts a definition for each specialty field of law, reviews Board policies and procedures, and considers appeals of denied applicant agencies.  The Board shares a director and staff with the Board of Law Examiners, Board of Continuing Legal Education, and the Lawyer Registration Office.

The Board meets approximately three or four times per year in St. Paul.  Meetings last from one and one-half to two hours.  An hour or less of preparation is usually required prior to Board meetings.  In addition, members are asked to serve on one or more committees that are responsible for matters such as examination review or review of proposed changes to program standards.

Two public members (non-lawyer) are being sought to fill two vacancies commencing February 1, 2024 on the 23-member Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board.  The all-volunteer Board is made up of 14 attorneys and 9 public members.  The Board is responsible for administering the Rules of Lawyers Professional Responsibility and for establishing the policies that govern the lawyer discipline system.
 
The Board meets 4 times per year to consider issues involving the lawyer discipline system, including rule changes and policy implementation.  Board members also preside over hearings concerning allegations of unprofessional conduct on the part of lawyers.  Panels meet approximately 3-4 times per year.  In addition, Board members consider appeals of dismissed complaints.
 
Experience on local District Ethics Committees is desirable but not mandatory.  Appointment will be for a three-year term; no member may serve more than two three-year terms.  The Minnesota Supreme Court will make the appointments.

The Supreme Court seeks one member to fill an attorney member position on the Minnesota Board of Public Defense.  The board consists of four public members appointed by the governor and five attorney members appointed by the Supreme Court.  Attorney members must be admitted to the practice of law and well acquainted with the defense of persons accused of crimes, but not employed as a prosecutor or judge.

Information Specific to this Position:

General Description of Duties: 
This position will involve prosecuting individuals charged with petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and gross misdemeanor offenses. Typical work performed includes:
 

  • Screening of cases for criminal charges by reviewing and evaluating reports from law enforcement, assessing evidentiary issues and the merits of cases, and recommending approval of or declining of charges.

  • Drafting, filing, and/or submitting criminal complaints, memoranda, discovery requests, appeals, proposed court orders, pleadings, motions, letters, and other legal documents.
  • Drafts ordinances, resolutions, rules, and policies.
  • Plans, organizes, mentors, and leads the work of lower-level employees within the Criminal Division as requested by the City Attorney, Deputy City Attorney, or Supervising Attorney.
  • Leads criminal prosecution activities and provides expert legal advice to the City Council, the Mayor's Office, City departments, boards, commissions, and committees.

Commission on Judicial Selection Opens Application Process for Vacancy in the Fourth Judicial District

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Today, the Commission on Judicial Selection announced a vacancy in Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District. The vacancy will occur upon the retirement of the Honorable James A. Moore. This seat will be chambered in Minneapolis in Hennepin County.

The application process is now open for this vacancy. The commission is searching for fair, experienced, and civic-minded individuals to serve on the bench and offer their talents and services to Minnesota’s judicial system. Per statute, the commission will consider the following qualifications for judicial office: integrity, maturity, health (if job related), judicial temperament, legal knowledge, ability, experience, and community service. The commission is seeking applicants who reflect Minnesota’s full diversity.

We operate on a 4.5-day workweek, ending at noon on Fridays.
