Overview
The Department of Ethics and Business Law in the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas, in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, invites applications for one tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, in the area of business law and compliance, beginning in September 2024. Candidates should demonstrate potential for strong research, excellence in teaching, and desire to engage in culturally responsive service activities that demonstrate their commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The department’s faculty are specialists in ethics, business law, and compliance including research and teaching at their intersection. Our faculty teach core and specialized courses in all OCB programs, including a specialized undergraduate Law & Compliance major and graduate programs in Organizational Ethics and Compliance. QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
- J.D. from an ABA accredited Law School, or alternatively, Ph.D. in law or a closely related field.
- Expertise in compliance [minimum two years experience in compliance] and ability to teach core and elective legal compliance courses and other business law courses.
- Undergraduate or graduate teaching experience [minimum one academic quarter or semester], with demonstrated ability and commitment to teaching excellence.
- A strong research agenda with potential to publish high-quality law reviews and peer reviewed journals.
- A commitment to engaging in service to the Ethics and Business Law Department, the Opus College of Business, and the University of St. Thomas.

About the University of St Thomas

The Executive Director provides leadership and overall management in carrying out the mission of
Children’s Law Center of Minnesota (CLC). The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the
administration, programs and the strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include
fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of
Directors.
Mission: Children’s Law Center of Minnesota promotes the legal rights and well-being of children and
youth. CLC’s staff and volunteers provide direct representation of children and youth, primarily in the
child welfare system, and advocate for changes in the systems that affect their lives.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Board Governance: Works with Board in order to fulfill the organization’s mission as defined by
the Board of Directors.
Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and
accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and make
informed decisions.
Specific tasks include:
i. Set Board meeting schedule, prepare for, and participate in all Board meetings.
Secure location and ensure all arrangements are made. Prior to each meeting,
prepare and distribute Board meeting agenda and documents.
ii. Keep the Board fully informed on the overall operational and financial condition
of the organization and on all significant developments affecting the
organization.
iii. Set Board committee meeting schedule, prepare for, and participate in all Board
committee meetings. Prior to each meeting, prepare and distribute Board
committee meeting agenda and documents.
iv. Assist in recruiting new Board members.
2. Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial
health of the organization.
Responsible for the fiscal integrity of CLC, to include submission to the Board of a
proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, with accurately reflect the
financial condition of the organization.
Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the
approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and ongoing operation of the
organization in a positive financial position.
Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered
into on behalf of the organization (except official documents requiring signatures of
Board officers or Board resolutions authorizing the ED to sign on behalf of CLC).
Specific tasks include:
i. Approval of all invoices and check writing
ii. Review bank account statements, approve bank transfers between checking and
savings accounts
iii. Review all financial statements (monthly) and prepare for finance committee
(every other month)
iv. Review general ledger and approve all QuickBooks entries
v. Prepare for annual audit, consolidate necessary information, work with the
auditors in preparation for the audit and when auditors are on site, provide
auditors with all necessary information.
vi. Work with consultant to prepare the 5500 Report (retirement summary).
vii. Work with finance committee to prepare annual organizational budget
3. Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with Board and staff to ensure that the
organization’s mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.
Responsible for strategic planning and implementation to ensure that CLC can
successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
Responsible for the enhancement of CLC’s brand/image by being active and visible in
the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private
organizations.
i. Speak at community, law firm and bar association meetings and forums to
introduce CLC, explain CLC’s mission, and identify CLC’s varying levels of needs
(from lawyers to funding).
ii. Oversee marketing and communication efforts.
iii. Serve as CLC’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the
media and the general public.
Maintain a working knowledge of significant development and trends in the field.
Lead and actively participate in CLC diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Provide leadership in system report efforts
4. Organization Operations: Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the
operations of the organization are appropriate.
Responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid
and volunteers and that sound human resource practices are in place and complied
with.
i. Overseeing and handling all staff related matters for paid staff and unpaid
interns and volunteers.
ii. Bi-weekly (or as necessary) staff meeting.
iii. Handle staff complaints and issues as they arise, in consultation with HR
resources where appropriate.
iv. Training and mentoring staff members and handling daily questions and issues.
v. Interview and hire new employees.
vi. Supervise and coordinate staff vacation schedules; review and approve staff’s
monthly vacation reports.
vii. Maintain a climate which attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse, qualified
and high performing staff.
viii. Submit bi-monthly payroll through ADP
ix. Retirement Plan contributions (403(b)), submit employee and employer
contributions twice a month.
x. HSA contributions, submit employee and employer contributions through Alerus
twice a month.
xi. Review and approve staff’s monthly expense reports.
Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support CLC’s
mission.
i. Review, edit and revise foundation grant proposals, reports, and grant-specific
program budgets. Ensure all grant application and report deadlines are met.
ii. Meet with foundations program officers and engage in foundation site visits.
iii. Network with CLC’s primary law firm donors to ensure donor retention.
iv. Speak at community, law firm and bar association meetings and forums to
introduce CLC, explain CLC’s mission, and identify CLC’s varying levels of needs
(from lawyers to funding).
v. Review and edit CLC e-newsletter and practice points.
vi. Review and approve website and social media content. Review and approve
advertisements for print and online media.
vii. Review and analyze development plan and periodic snapshots of fundraising
efforts.
viii. Annual benefit brainstorming ideas, awardees, awards, marketing, and all facets
of event planning from location to food to invitations to announcements.
Review and oversee everything related to the event, maintaining contact with
major sponsors regarding contributions, preparing thank you notes. Ensure that
staff is on track with components of the event.
x. Work with Board Development Committee and CLC Development Manager to
ensure Board driven fundraising is moving forward.
x. Submit invoices to Hennepin County and Minnesota Office of Justice Programs.
Responsible for organization’s general operations, compliance and logistics.
i. File the completed and Board-approved audit with the Attorney General
(annually).
ii. Update organization’s status with the Minnesota Secretary of State (annually).
iii. Renew all insurance plans: legal malpractice, property casualty, employee
health and dental, worker’s compensation, and unemployment insurance.
iv. Ensure compliance with office lease and manage lease renewals and
amendments as necessary. Work with the landlord on office space issues and
maintenance.
v. Work with staff to identify organization technology needs, authorize purchase
of any equipment and updates.
5. Program and Volunteer Attorney Management
Ensure that CLC’s program is implemented effectively and carries out the organization’s
mission
i. Plan, implement, and provide leadership for CLC’s programs.
ii. Manage and build network of volunteer attorneys.
iii. Develop and implement training programs for attorneys and other child
advocates.
iv. Respond to requests for amicus briefs.
v. Advocate for CLC with governmental bodies, courts, community groups, law
firms, media and other child advocacy groups.
Qualifications and Attributes:
- Passion for, and commitment to, the Children’s Law Center mission.
- A minimum of eight years in executive or management experience at a respected nonprofit or
public institution and a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and a law degree. - Exceptional leadership and communication skills, including a proven track record in leading and
growing organizations and communicating with key stakeholders. - Possesses working knowledge of the legal, fiscal, and regulatory environment in which a
nonprofit operates. - Knowledgeable and experienced in finance, budget development, and fundraising principles,
including major gift cultivation. - Strategic thinker who can also plan and execute against short-term and long-term objectives,
and create action plans that yield results. - Has personal ethics and integrity that reflect positively on CLC’s mission and the organization, is
a passionate and convincing advocate for CLC’s mission. Is involved and respected in the

Job Summary
This position offers a hybrid work schedule which includes telework days and in office days at a DLI office building as required by business need.
This position is part-time intermittent, requiring approximately 20 hours per week for two (2)+ years.
This temporary position exists to support Office of General Counsel attorneys and a third-party research team with advanced professional legal analysis and consultative work on a legislatively required research study. The study will identify systemic or regulatory changes to improve the experience and outcomes of employees with work-related post-traumatic stress disorder. This position will also support the regulatory, legislative, and rulemaking needs of DLI through legal research and analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of professional legal experience* OR three years of advanced technical/paraprofessional legal experience* performing legal research and analysis sufficient to aid a third-party research team’s completion of a study. Demonstrated experience to include:
- Completing legal research
- Preparing legal documents for attorney review**
- Preparing summaries and reports
*Associate degree in the areas of legal studies, public administration, or a related field may substitute for six months of experience, a Bachelor’s degree in the areas of legal studies, public administration or a related field may substitute for one year of professional legal experience. Juris doctor degree may substitute for two years of professional legal experience.
- Analytical and research skills to resolve complex problems.
- Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders and work collaboratively with a research team and Office of General Counsel attorneys.
- Written communication skills sufficient to draft clear, concise and complete legal documents and reports with the ability to convey complex information in a plain language.
- Ability to use legal resources such as statutes, rules, Westlaw, legal periodicals, case law reports and the internet to conduct legal research. Ability to organize work and prioritize among multiple demands under time constraints.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, who do not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or other common experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Language skills other than English (such as Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL).
- Experience working in a government setting (city, county, or state employment).
- Knowledge of statutes, rules and regulations pertaining to workers’ compensation.
- Experience with contract management.
- Experience with research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Experience managing a project.

Job Summary
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission is guiding the state through important changes in the energy and telecommunications sectors, which have enormous impact on the daily lives of Minnesotans. To help with this work, the Public Utilities Commission will be hiring up to 3 attorneys to join the agency’s legal unit. This is an exciting opportunity to join an emerging practice area and serve the public.
This position will join an established, high performing team of attorneys with responsibility for writing Commission orders; assisting in administrative rulemaking efforts of the Commission; helping to provide legal advice to Commission staff; and reviewing legislative proposals.
Job Duties:
• Draft formal orders memorializing and articulating the legal and policy grounds for decisions of the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission
• Attend Commission meetings and record Commission decisions
• Lead and coordinate Commission rulemakings consistent with statutory requirements
• Review and draft proposed legislation
This position will be used to hire for up to 3 positions for the Legal & Rulemaking Unit.
Minimum Qualifications
• Minnesota Bar admission by time of hire.
• Minimum of two years’ experience as a practicing lawyer (which may include experience as a judicial clerk)
• Demonstrated excellent writing skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in administrative law or public utilities law
• Judicial clerkship, particularly for an appellate court
• Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and marginalized communities.

The Office is currently seeking an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) to serve as the attorney manager of the Antitrust Division, which is housed in the Consumer Protection Section of the Office. As the division manager, you will manage a division of five AAGs who protect healthy competition and fair markets for the benefit of all Minnesotans by enforcing state and federal antitrust laws. These laws prohibit conduct that interferes with healthy business competition, such as monopoly abuse, anticompetitive mergers or acquisitions, and anticompetitive agreements not to compete. In this position, you would be at the forefront of a revitalized era of antitrust enforcement and your work will have a direct, measurable impact on the lives of Minnesotans.
Antitrust attorneys can expect to participate in high-profile antitrust investigations and litigation in industries such as health care and agriculture that play a major role in Minnesota’s economy and have the opportunity to work closely with other states and federal antitrust enforcement agencies. Such cases include, for example: In re Generic Pharmaceuticals Antitrust Pricing Litigation – MDL 2724 (allegations of illegal price fixing by dozens of generic drug manufacturers for hundreds of generic drugs that treat cancer, diabetes, MS, and other conditions); FTC, et al. v. Syngenta Crop Protection AG, et al. (illegal suppression of competition from generic pesticide manufacturers through branded manufacturers use of “loyalty programs”); and the investigation of the proposed merger of Fairview Health Services and Sanford Health.
This position offers engaging, interesting, and fulfilling work. The attorney division manager is responsible for overseeing the work of the division, including balancing the staffing needs of various investigations and cases with the interests of AAGs in particular subjects and industries. The attorney division manager is also tasked with management of the professional development of the division’s AAGs, and ensuring ongoing training, leadership opportunities, and mentorship opportunities to support their growth.
