The Office is currently seeking an Assistant Attorney General (“AAG”) to lead the Consumer Protection Section’s efforts to provide restitution to individuals and entities harmed by violations of Minnesota’s consumer protection, charities, and wage theft laws.  In this role, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing the process for distributing restitution in multiple matters, which may include coordinating with third-party claims administrators and handling related processes (such as unclaimed property).  In addition, you will lead the Consumer Protection Section’s efforts to collect judgments owed to the State, in furtherance of both restituting victims and returning money to the State’s general fund.  You will also assist other AAGs in the Consumer Protection Section with both substantive and procedural bankruptcy issues that arise when targets of investigations or defendants in litigation file for bankruptcy protection.

In this role, you will also have the opportunity to work on important consumer protection investigations and litigation that seek to protect some of Minnesota’s most vulnerable and underserved communities around the State.  While the Office’s consumer protection work is for the benefit of all Minnesota consumers, much of the Office’s investigative work and enforcement actions are focused on unlawful business practices that target people of limited means, the elderly, students, children, and youth, as well as immigrant communities.  In this position, you would be at the forefront of cutting-edge consumer protection investigations that have a direct, measurable impact on the lives of Minnesota consumers.

This position offers a rare opportunity to help strengthen a priority area within the Attorney General’s Office and requires a dynamic individual who must be organized, detail-oriented, creative, a problem solver, have a strong initiative and work ethic, and possess excellent legal and interpersonal skills.  The Office strives to balance the staffing needs of various consumer protection matters with the interests of AAGs in particular subjects and industries.  AAGs are encouraged to take on more responsibility as their careers progress, and will receive ongoing training, leadership opportunities, professional development, and mentorship opportunities to support their growth.  If you are offered this position, you can expect to have a great deal of responsibility for and control over your daily work and will be expected to manage your caseload to ensure matters are moving expeditiously.  A commitment to public service work and to being a great restitution, collections, and bankruptcy attorney is a must!

  • Outstanding organization, writing, research, and oral advocacy skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Excel

Along with a cover letter, applicants must also submit a writing sample of up to 5 pages.

To be considered at the S2 level, candidates must have 6 years of related experience. To be considered at the S3 level, candidates must have 12 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of civil litigation, collections, and/or bankruptcy experience
  • Knowledge of federal bankruptcy procedure and issues including Chapters 7, 11, 11 (subchapter V), and 13
  • Knowledge of federal and state collections (including voidable transactions), and consumer protection law
  • Experience handling cases involving consumer protection issues
  • Experience investigating and building cases for litigation, including cases involving consumer protection claims

Although collections, bankruptcy, and/or consumer protection experience is a strength, the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office is particularly interested in applications from litigators generally.  Attorneys with experience in class action litigation, commercial litigation, or other litigation fields are encouraged to apply.  Attorneys who lack the above-listed experience, but who have other experience that they believe would be relevant to the Division’s work are also encouraged to apply.
