We seek law students from diverse backgrounds, with a variety of experiences and skills, and a sincere interest in serving the public. First, second, and third-year students are eligible for this law clerk position.

This law clerk position focuses on antitrust law in food and agriculture markets. The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office is offering law students a unique opportunity to work directly with Assistant Attorneys General and other staff of the AGO and gain hands-on experience including researching legal issues, drafting written product, and reviewing documents. This position allows law students to develop professional skills and expand their knowledge while performing meaningful and challenging work focused on antitrust issues in food and agriculture markets. We require our law clerks to assume a significant amount of responsibility over their files and put forth the very best work on behalf of the public. Although the Minnesota Farmers Union Foundation sponsors this position, the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office directs the work of the law clerk, and the Minnesota Farmers Union does not have knowledge of and is not involved in the investigatory work of the clerk. The clerk will have the option of working with the Minnesota Farmers Union and other partners on legal education.

Applicants should be prepared to work 40 hours a week during a ten/twelve-week period beginning in June. Law Clerks will receive a salary of $20/hour. This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment.

The Office is currently seeking a Summer Law Clerk to work directly with Assistant Attorneys General across all divisions of the Office and gain hands‑on experience reviewing documents, researching legal issues, drafting written product, and appearing in court.  This position allows law students to develop professional skills and expand their knowledge while performing meaningful and challenging work on a wide variety of issues.  We require our law clerks to assume a significant amount of responsibility over their files and put forth the very best work on behalf of the public.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota is accepting applications for a Courtroom
Deputy/Judicial Assistant for District Court Judge Jerry W. Blackwell, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The
Courtroom Deputy/Judicial Assistant performs a wide range of du�es including managing the
judge’s caseload, processing orders and handling scheduling maters, and performing
administra�ve and clerical du�es as assigned by the Judge. The Courtroom Deputy/Judicial
Assistant also assists in the day-to-day conduct of court business. In addi�on, this posi�on
interacts with lawyers and members of the public on behalf of the judge. Since the Courtroom
Deputy/Judicial Assistant is generally the first member of a judge’s staff whom outsiders meet,
candidates must have a pleasant and posi�ve a�tude, excellent organiza�on skills and refined
customer service skills. The typical work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday,
8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. (additional hours may be required).
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Manages the Judge’s caseload by calendaring and regulating case movement;
    monitoring filing of pertinent documents and timely responses to judicial orders;
    scheduling hearings, trials, and conferences.
  • Makes entries of all documents, orders, minutes, notices, and proceedings on the
    docket. Transmits notices, judgments, and orders to appropriate parties.
  • Drafts judgments and orders for the Judge’s approval.
  • Prepares and edits legal documents, proofreads, and verifies citations.
  • Reviews information relating to pending cases to ensure that all records and reference
    materials are available for use by the judge and counsel.
  • Coordinates appearances of custodial parties; and schedules and attends court
    proceedings. Enters orders, minutes, notices, and proceedings on the docket.
    Transmits notices, judgments, and orders to appropriate parties.
  • Assists with the docketing of cases and keeps the Judge and Chambers staff informed of
    case progress.
  • Assists the Judge and parties in jury selection and maintains records of jury selection
    and attendance.
  • Reviews information related to pending cases to ensure that all records and reference
    materials are available for use by the Judge and counsel.
  • Assists with preparation for and the orderly flow of court proceedings by setting up the
    courtroom, troubleshooting the evidence presentation system, arranging for any
    necessary equipment, assuring presence of all necessary participants, and managing
    exhibits.
  • Schedules interpreters and processes transcripts.
  • Reviews pro se filings for appropriateness for public access.
  • Maintains the judge's day-to-day calendar. Arranges meetings, conferences, private
    attorney admissions and naturalization ceremonies as well as wedding ceremonies over
    which the judge may preside. Assists Judge with committee work, presentations and
    speaking engagements.
  • Serves as the primary source of information on scheduling conferences, hearings, trials,
    and other case processes and is responsible for maintaining accurate and timely
    communications on case status.
  • Prepares travel authorizations and travel vouchers as directed.
  • Reviews CJA eVouchers for compliance with CJA regulations. Prepare appropriate
    documentation for judicial review, enter judge's decision into eVoucher system.
  • Greets callers both in person and over the phone. Respond to inquiries and direct
    callers to the appropriate court staff.
  • Assists with incoming and exiting law clerk logistics and extern onboarding.
  • Prepares and maintains the judge’s travel itineraries and arrangements. Prepares and
    submits travel vouchers on behalf of the judge and law clerks.
  • Prepares and files required reports on the judge’s behalf, including the Financial
    Disclosure Report, the Governance and Travel Report, and other reports as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Two years of general administrative experience; and
  • Two years of specialized experience. Specialized experience is progressively responsible
    clerical or administrative experience requiring the regular and recurring application of
    clerical procedures that demonstrate the ability to apply a body of rules, regulations,
    directives, or laws and involve the routine use of specialized terminology and
    automated software and equipment for word processing, data entry or report
    generation.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A law degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience working for a District Judge is preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent ability to communicate well both verbally and in
    writing, and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Good judgment and the ability to organize work to meet deadlines and complete
    multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  • The ability to work independently but also to work as a team player in support of the
    Court's overall mission.
  • Skill in communicating and working with judges, Chambers staff and attorneys during
    the process of scheduling events and managing courtroom and Chambers logistics.
  • Ability to take notes and summarize material for minute entries/judgments in a
    sometimes-distracting setting.
  • Excellent computer and typing skills including skills in word processing (MS Word, Power
    Point, and Excel), proficiency with the databases, scanning and uploading documents,
    email, and web browsers.
  • Familiarity with federal and local rules. Knowledge of legal terminology and legal
    documents.
    ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
  • Work is performed primarily in Judge Blackwell’s Chambers, in other office settings, or
    in the courtroom.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Some lifting may be required to handle and set up equipment in the courtroom or to
    address the needs of Chambers, as requested.

Description

The Minnesota Board on Judicial Standards is seeking qualified applicants for a staff attorney position for investigation, legal research, and other activities related to the Board’s responsibilities. The position will be either 24 or 32 hours per week at the Board office in Mendota Heights. The Board is an independent State agency that responds to complaints alleging that a judge has violated the Minnesota Code of Judicial Conduct. The Board also handles judicial disability matters, issues advisory opinions, and seeks to educate judges and others about judicial ethics.

Example of Duties

The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform.

  • Assist in the evaluation and investigation of complaints against state court judges and other judicial officers.
  • Provide written reports summarizing the investigation of assigned cases and analyzing and evaluating the cases.
  • Research legal issues as assigned.
  • Attend Board meetings.
  • Provide information to and take direction from the Board and Executive Secretary as requested.
  • Provide customer service necessary to accurately perform intake of complaints.
  • Develop good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

 

Typical Qualifications

Below are the past experiences that will enable success in the role. For education requirements listed, the equivalent number of years of related experience may serve as a substitute.
What You Must Have: 

  • Law degree from an accredited college or university.
  • License to practice law in Minnesota or another jurisdiction.
  • Three to five years of experience as an attorney in private or public practice.
  • A high level of integrity and good judgment and the ability to maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

  • Knowledge of applicable substantive and procedural law, statutes, and rules.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of legal research and analysis.

What You Will Earn 
The expected starting range for this position is $40.43 to $45.00 per hour.  The full salary range for this position is $40.43 - $62.62 per hour.  This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and will be eligible for State of MN employee benefits.

The Minnesota Board on Judicial Standards is seeking qualified applicants for a staff attorney position for investigation, legal research, and other activities related to the Board’s responsibilities. The position will be either 24 or 32 hours per week at the Board office in Mendota Heights. The Board is an independent State agency that responds to complaints alleging that a judge has violated the Minnesota Code of Judicial Conduct. The Board also handles judicial disability matters, issues advisory opinions, and seeks to educate judges and others about judicial ethics.Example of Duties

The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform.

  • Assist in the evaluation and investigation of complaints against state court judges and other judicial officers.
  • Provide written reports summarizing the investigation of assigned cases and analyzing and evaluating the cases.
  • Research legal issues as assigned.
  • Attend Board meetings.
  • Provide information to and take direction from the Board and Executive Secretary as requested.
  • Provide customer service necessary to accurately perform intake of complaints.
  • Develop good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

 Typical Qualifications

Below are the past experiences that will enable success in the role. For education requirements listed, the equivalent number of years of related experience may serve as a substitute.
What You Must Have: 

  • Law degree from an accredited college or university.
  • License to practice law in Minnesota or another jurisdiction.
  • Three to five years of experience as an attorney in private or public practice.
  • A high level of integrity and good judgment and the ability to maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of legal research and analysis.

What You Will Earn 
The expected starting range for this position is $40.43 to $45.00 per hour.  The full salary range for this position is $40.43 - $62.62 per hour.  This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and will be eligible for State of MN employee benefits.

7. Represent the State of Minnesota and Dakota County in various state and federal courts at pretrial, trial, sentencing, appellate hearings, and post-conviction proceedings related to the prosecution of criminal activity.
8. Provide training for law enforcement agencies, social workers and others regarding applicable developments in the law.
9. Attend staff meetings and other required meetings.

POSITION DEFINITION

The United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Minnesota is recruiting a Short-Term Law Clerk to Judge Kesha L. Tanabe. A Law Clerk to a United States Bankruptcy Judge performs substantive review, research, and writing on matters pending before the Court.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES INCLUDE:

Reviews complaints, petitions, motions, and other pleadings that come before the Court to determine the issues involved and the basis for relief;

Reviews dockets of pending litigation and monitors progress;

Screens motions and drafts orders for judge’s review;

Performs legal research;

Identifies issues before the Court and makes recommendations;

Provides information to the judge in connection with pending litigation;

Drafts bench memos for the judge’s consideration;

Proofreads orders and opinions, verifying citations;

Maintains liaison between the Court and litigants;

Communicates with counsel, court officials, and litigants regarding procedural requirements;

Keeps abreast of changes in the law and briefs the judge;

Assists the judge during courtroom proceedings;

Shares in the administrative tasks of chambers; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

·       Graduate of a law school of recognized standing by the American Bar Association or the Association of American Law Schools; and,

BACKGROUND CHECK

This is a sensitive position within the Judiciary. The selected candidate will be required to undergo an FBI fingerprint check through the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Division. Appointment to this position is provisional, and retention depends upon a favorable suitability determination based on the results of the fingerprint check.

BENEFITS

The United States Bankruptcy Court is a part of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government. Employees of the United States Bankruptcy Court serve under “Excepted Appointment” and are considered “At-Will” employees.

Because the anticipated term of this appointment is less than one year, this position will be eligible for health and commuter benefits and for supplemental dental and vision coverage, but will NOT BE ELIGIBLE for life insurance, the court’s flexible benefits program (ex: Health Care Reimbursement Account) or participation in the FERS retirement system or the Thrift Savings Plan.

The successful applicant will earn 4 hours of annual leave and 4 hours of sick leave for every complete two-week pay period worked.

This position will supervise workplace nondiscrimination and harassment investigations and analyze complex reasonable accommodation requests to ensure MnDOT meets their obligation for effective response to employees, applicants, and complaints of discrimination, discriminatory harassment, and reasonable accommodation requests.

Coordinate all aspects of MnDOT’s response to charges of discrimination filed with agencies (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the MN Department of Human Rights) to ensure effective, thorough, and timely responses.  Provides in-depth legal analysis of issues and claims, prepares MnDOT’s position statement ensuring legal/substantive defenses are raised, and responds to agency subpoenas and information requests.  Additionally, provides counsel to management on employment discrimination laws, state personnel laws and rules, and MN Government Data Practices Act.

General Duty Statement

This position performs advanced professional work and a wide variety of complex to highly complex legal assistant services to attorneys in the Civil Division. Duties include gathering, organizing, and summarizing documentary evidence and relevant information in complex to highly complex civil processes and making recommendations based on findings. Duties also include creating, processing and/or drafting complex legal forms and documents. This position acts as a liaison with other City departments, outside agencies, and outside attorneys.
 
Primary Responsibilities: 
A wide range of public sector real estate, land use, and development-related matters including the following:

  • Conduct project intake and prepare/organize file information and file management.
  • Prepare correspondence, documents, and materials that relate to real estate, lending, leasing, and licensing transactions.
  • Compile and summarize relevant materials, identify potential issues, and propose recommendations for use by attorneys.
  • Calendar and monitor milestones and critical dates.
  • Assist with due diligence process.
  • Assist with city, state, and federal compliance determinations.
  • Maintain repository of template documents and city attorney opinions and update as needed.
  • Work with city staff, outside counsel, title companies, lenders and other parties.
  • Prepare closing checklists, closing documents, and manage closing binder.
  • Prepare transaction memoranda.
  • Review title and survey documents.
  • Record real estate documents and financing statements.
  • Prepare resolutions and board reports relating to zoning and other matters for the City Council and various boards and commissions.
  • Assist in research, writing, editing, and proofreading real estate documents, contracts, and other legal documents.
  • Perform property record tract index research as needed.
  • Work with attorneys and staff to support day-to-day legal needs.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree;
  • Paralegal Certification from an accredited program;
  • Four years of experience as a Legal Assistant, two years of which must have been at the intermediate level of professional work, providing legal assistant services of moderate complexity and variety to attorneys.

Continued employment as a Legal Assistant III is contingent upon maintaining the Paralegal Certification.

Preferred Qualifications: Four years of experience supporting a real estate legal practice. Understanding of municipal real estate, development, and finance practices including local, state, and federal funding.
